Sonnet 2

Who for the love of God is good at what I mean to tell you
competence, Dr. George McMorrow, who claimed
"There is not substitute for competency." He wanted proof,
whereas I'll gladly take ability and believe. Remember
someone stray in the academic hallway thinking thinking while
the shoots of crocus outside are destined to hold even
in November because we recall them. Our minds not quite
the carte blanche we declare they are as in babes not always
but often in the woods upstart themselves into modest adulthood
with shiny waxen outer surfaces of cars they can't yet drive.
The bounding outward from a childhood room to walk
only to walk beyond the cago around the bloom the mist
the creased light of the afternoon not random but right
where it is (supposed) as am I on the cusp of rehearsal
only cozied into an imagined fourteen measure rest.
