Bullybine PLUS BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Psychologist Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial development are:
  • Trust vs. mistrust
The first stage, which occurs from birth to 12 months, when a child learns to trust that their caregivers will meet their needs
  • Autonomy vs. shame and doubt
Children learn to be independent, build confidence, and form relationships outside of their primary caregivers
  • Initiative vs. guilt
Children assert themselves more through play and social interactions
  • Industry vs. inferiority
Children develop a sense of pride in their abilities through social interactions, and cope with new academic and social demands
  • Identity vs. role confusion
Adolescents search for their identity, questioning their beliefs, perspectives, and habits
  • Intimacy vs. isolation
Individuals learn to form long-term commitments to others
  • Generativity vs. stagnation
Adults strive to create or nurture things, often through parenting or contributing to the community
  • Ego integrity vs. despair
In late adulthood, people reflect on their lives and either feel satisfied or regretful
Mental health providers can use Erikson's stages to help patients understand themselves and adjust to life changes. cRAWLs upward and clings, lingering
